Nearby peaks catch snow during the colder months of June to October. The town itself enjoys mild temperatures and cool nights year-round. The Merida Teleferico is one of the longest and highest cable cars in the world, carrying visitors up to Pico Espejo for an incredible view of nearby Pico Bolivar, Venezuela’s tallest mountain, which at almost 5000 metres is higher than Europe’s Mont Blanc. Nearby are natural hot springs, high altitude lakes, charming villages and rustic farms.
The city of Merida itself has a charming mix of colonial architecture. Andean cuisine is a highlight, especially the delicious piscandina soup, and the various pastelitos or pastries. Visitors fly to the airport of El Vigia, or join group trips in buses from Caracas.
